Call for University Messages and Articles This is a call for papers for the 2010 United Nations Day of Vesak Conference to be hosted by the Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University along with some patronage from the ITRI of Japan, during the celebrations for the 7th United Nations Day of Vesak (UNDV) held in Bangkok, Thailand from 23-25 May 2010. The conference and celebrations are expected to draw a gathering of 3000 people - including leading scholars and Buddhist leaders from all of the Buddhist traditions around the world. The academic conference, held on the second day of events, is being organized by the International Association of Buddhist Universities (IABU).

Every year since the resolution passed by the United Nation’s General Assembly on 15 December 1999 - the thrice-sacred day of Vesak (celebrating the birth, enlightenment and passing away of the Buddha Gotama) is celebrated internationally.  Bangkok, Thailand has hosted this august international gathering five of the previous six occasions, and will again host the 7th UNDV event, under the patronage of the Supreme Sangha Council and the Royal Government of the Kingdom of Thailand, for 2010/2553 BE.

Papers are now being invited for the IABU Academic Conference on “Global Recovery – The Buddhist Perspective.”  We encourage the interdisciplinary study and welcome proposals from scholars in all fields related the main and sub-themes of the conference, which include the following, again:

Main Theme: Global Recovery – The Buddhist Perspective

Sub-themes:

  • Global Recovery through Mental Well-Being
  • Global Recovery through Buddhist Education
  • Global Recovery through Harmonious Coexistence
  • Global Recovery through Buddhist Ecology
  • Global Recovery through Engaged Buddhism

Only fifty papers will be invited for presentation during this academic conference, and as a reward, will be published in our 7th UNDV Conference Text on “Global Recovery – The Buddhist Perspective” – to be available on the day of the academic conference.  Papers selected for publication will be those that combine:

  • innovative theoretical perspectives,
  • clarity of organization,
  • an accessible prose style,
  • and significant research in primary resources

...to produce an account that deals with relevant topic material, Buddhist texts and the readers in meaningful ways.
